New help is available! The Elopement Issues Workbook 2012 Edition.

This workbook can be used in conjunction with our 8-Hour Elopement Issues Workshop or by itself as it contains key answers in the following areas:

      Section I:

Elopement - Defining the word and the issues:

This section deals with the many definitions for elopement currently being used by facilities across the nation.  How does your facility define elopement?  How does your State and CMS define elopement?  Without the proper definition your facility could incur significant fines when an elopement occurs!

      Section II:

Elopement prevention - Technology and Techniques: (New: Updated Technologies)

There are a lot of good products that can assist your facility in attempting to prevent elopements.  Was the technology you use for elopement prevention developed as elopement prevention technology?  If not, does your facility state in their elopement policy how you are using this technology to assist you in attempting to prevent elopements?  Do you have a back-up plan of action to implement WHEN the technology fails?  Are you using your technology correctly?  Most important, are you documenting properly your education, maintenance, and use of the elopement prevention technology?

      Section III:

Patient and Facility Assessment techniques: (New: Additional Risk Factors)

How do you assess your Residents for elopement risk?  When do you assess your Residents?  Risk is greatly affected by Resident mobility, so what do you base your mobility assessment on?

      Section IV:

Elopement Policy - How to "word" your policies that deal with elopement:

Does your facility have a separate elopement policy?  Does this policy show a tiered or layered systematic approach to attempt to prevent elopement?  Do you "word" your policy to show that all elopements cannot be prevented?

      Section V:

      Legal issues in Elopements:

Are you aware of all the different legal implications possible when an elopement occurs?  Could there be criminal charges?  What will happen if you appeal a state fine?  Will there be civil litigations involved?  Who will testify?  What kind of questions will you be asked?

      Section VI:

The Elopement Response Plan: (New: RESCUE PLAN FORM & RESCUE PLAN MATRIX)

Does your facility have an elopement response plan for WHEN (NOT IF) an elopement occurs?  Who wrote your plan?  Who updates and exercises your plan?  Does your plan provide adequate supervision for the remaining Residents?  How often does your plan have you search your facility?  Does your plan provide instructions for actions to be taken when the Resident is found?  Is training on the elopement response plan a "core competency"?

      Section VII:

Dealing with State and Federal/CMS Surveyors: (New: Updates on the State Operations Manual
      Appendix Q)

How well do you know CMS Regulation Appendix Q, Attachment C that deals with the 6-Key Components?  Are you aware that the CMS F323 and F324 Tags that deal with elopement were combined and rewritten into a new F323 Tag in July 2007? Do you know what this changes for elopement issues?

      Section VIII:

Special Considerations:  (New: Additional Information added)

What are some key changes happening in the aging population that are now entering our care facilities that is different from the current generation?  Can you/should you give special consideration to certain Residents?

      Section IX - (NEW SECTION)

Crisis Communications and the Use of the Media

      The workbook also includes:

Sample Elopement Response Plan using the check-list method (educational format)

      Price – Call for pricing

Have you had an elopement incident at your facility? We can provide a review of your policy and response plan along with a review of a particular Elopement Incident. This will require phone interviews with those involved in the incident. A confidential report will be issued to your facility comparing your incident actions to current trends in the industry. Remember, all elopements are NOT preventable. We can also assist with appeals to you state regulating agencies regarding Fines imposed for an elopement incident (see medical-legal consulting).
